Sal’s Gumbo Shack

30 Mar

Taste of Long Beach Rating: 4/5

Menu:

They have a very limited menu during most days. It consists of Hot Wings, Fries, Onion Rings, Fried Okra, Fried Pickles, Turkey Burger, Gumbo, BBQ Shrimp, Po’ Boy’s, and Jambalaya. Sunday is Soul Food Sunday where they add Fried Chicken, Ox tails, Turkey Wings, Turkey Chops, and Turkey Necks to the menu. The Greens, Mac and Cheese, Yams, and Red beans and rice are only served on Wednesday and Sunday.

Taste :

My brother and I ordered the Gumbo, Jambalaya, Fried Chicken, Fried Pickles, Mac and Cheese, and Red Beans and Rice to share. The first thing we tried was the Gumbo. It comes with rice, turkey, shrimp, and crab legs. I was expecting more flavor in the sauce, so we were a little disappointed with it. That’s not saying the Gumbo wasn’t good, it was tasty and I wouldn’t hesitate to eat it again, it just wasn’t as flavorful as I was expecting. My brother got a piece of turkey with a huge chunk of gristle still attached which turned him off a bit as well. The fried chicken was very flavorful, moist, and fried perfectly. The fried pickles were plentiful and flavored very nicely. Dipping them in their ranch dressing made for a great little treat. The mac and cheese and red beans and rice were also very good. The true winner on this trip was the Jambalaya. It was packed with flavor and I couldn’t stop eating it. I would go back to Sal’s just to get another order of Jambalaya.

Location:

This place is small, but there is plenty of room to sit and wait for your order to finish cooking. We were getting our food to go and were able to sit and one of the tables while we waited. We didn’t have any trouble finding a place to park nearby. We were greeted by C.C. when we entered. She was extremely friendly and welcoming. She took our order quickly and suggested some of their deserts. We didn’t take her up on the offer, but the deserts did sound delicious. They are open from 11:00 am – 8:00 pm Monday – Saturday and 12:00 pm – 7 am on Sunday.

Summary:

If you are in the mood for some great soul food, definitely try out Sal’s. Be sure to stop by on Sunday to try out their Soul Food Sunday menu.

Canadian Pizza & Grill

25 Sep

Taste of Long Beach Rating: 4/5

Menu:

This menu has what you would normally think of getting at a pizza place. The prices seem a bit high, but a quick search on Google found me a coupon for a Large 1 topping pizza for $6.99. A Medium is normally $11.99, Large is $12.99, and X-Large is 14.99. When you build your own pizza, you get 1 free topping, but anything past that costs extra. Chicken and extra cheese will set you back $2 each. The one topping that they don’t have and I think all pizza places should have is regular bacon. They do have some specialty pizzas, as well as sandwiches and pasta dishes. Overall, the menu is big enough that you will be able to find something you like, and small enough to where you aren’t overwhelmed.

Taste :

This is a good tasting pizza. The crust is thin, but not too thin. It has a nice crunch on the outside while being soft and chewy on the inside. In my pizza, there were a few areas that were a little heavy in sauce, but overall the amount of sauce and the taste of the sauce were great. I think it could have used a little more cheese on top, but the cheese did get a nice brown exterior and tasted very good. The thing that really surprised me was how much it lacked grease. Even with the pepperonis I didn’t see much grease if any on it. The one downfall was the excessive amount of cornmeal that was on the bottom of the pizza. I realize this is a necessary evil so they can actually get the pizza off of the peel and into the oven, but this seemed to be a little too much and I found myself constantly having to wipe my hands to rid them of the crunchy crust they were forming.

Location:

This place is small. There is just enough room inside to pick up your pizza. While behind they counter they seemed to have plenty of room, they obviously don’t want the customers hanging out in the store. There is a parking lot behind the store next to it, and very little parking on the street in front of it. The employee’s seemed indifferent to me while I placed my order over the phone and even when I came to pick it up. When I called, they never asked my name or any identifying information. They never asked, “is there anything else?” They heard my order, gave me the total and that was it. When I picked it up, a man came to the counter and I told him I called in an order for a large pepperoni pizza. He went to a rack, grabbed it, told me the total, took my money, gave me change, and that was it. No other words were spoken to me. So I grabbed my pizza and left. Normally pizza places will ask if you need plates, Parmesan cheese, or peppers. At the very least, they say thank you. I didn’t get any of that.

Summary:

This is a great place to go pick up a good pizza when you are in the mood. If you don’t expect great customer service, you won’t be disappointed. It appeared that they had some good lunch special deals during the week. Also be sure to search the net for coupons you can use to lower your costs. I will definitely be going to this place again!

Nicks Deli

14 Aug

Taste of Long Beach Rating: 4/5

Menu:

This menu has all kinds of items from sandwiches to burritos. But to be honest of the tons of times I have been here, I have only ever ordered one thing. The famous breakfast burrito.

Taste :

This is by far the best breakfast burrito around. It comes with salsa, eggs, potatoes, cheese, and chorizo wrapped in a tortilla. The secret is to ask for extra bacon so they put whole strips of bacon in there. You can order it mild, hot, and 911. The only difference in the heat is how many red pepper flakes they put in. They don’t have different intensities of salsa, just the one. You can also order the breakfast burrito in a one and a halfer which as I’m sure you can guess is 1.5 times the size of the regular breakfast burrito. The flavors in this burrito mingle perfectly with each other make for a great way to start the day.

Location:

This is a small location in a small strip mall. It can get very crowded in the early morning when everyone is coming in to get their burritos. The guy working the register is very nice and has an amazing skill of remembering people who come in. I could imagine it gets very busy during lunch when school is in since it’s just a block or two away from Los Al high school.

Los Alamitos, CA 90720

Summary:

Someday I will have to try some of the other items, but for now I will love going there for their breakfast burritos. If you haven’t already tried this place or the original on main st in Seal Beach, give it a shot and enjoy the amazing breakfast burrito you have been missing.

Taqueria La Mexicana

13 Aug

Taste of Long Beach Rating: 4/5

Menu:

This menu has all the things you would want from a Mexican restaurant and for a very reasonable price. Everything has a description of what comes in it so you can omit anything you don’t like.

Taste :

This place has become one of my favorite places to eat over the last few weeks. On this particular trip I ordered the regular Carnitas Burrito and a beef taquito. The taquito came with plenty of sour cream and quacamole and had a very moist meaty interior with a crunchy shell. The Burrito is just the right size to provide a full feeling without feeling like you ate too much. The flavor in all of the meats I have tried is wonderful and distinctive. Many times you go to places and everything taste the same, that is not the case with Taqueria La Mexicana. Everything I have tried on this menu has been very good, and I will not hesitate to try more items.

Location:

This is a tiny little place just off of Cherry st next to a donut shop. There is a small parking lot that I have never seen full so there should be plenty of parking for you. The menu is clearly displayed in the front of the restaurant and as mentioned earlier very clearly lists the ingredients in each item.

1901 E Carson St
Long Beach, CA 90807

Summary:

The food here is very good and very reasonably priced. The employees are always very nice and willing to modify any item they offer. If you are anywhere near here or any of their other locations make sure you stop by and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

England Fish and Chips

09 Aug

Taste of Long Beach Rating: 3/5

England Fish and Chips at Taste of Long Beach

Menu:

The menu here covers all of your basic fish and chip items. They have fish, shrimp, scallops, and chicken as their main items. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are large and very filling.

Taste :

Today I ordered the Fried Chicken, Jumbo Shrimp, Fish, and Onion rings. The chicken was regular fried chicken still on the bone. I was expecting chicken strips, so I wasn’t as excited about this. The shrimp was definitely jumbo. I don’t remember the last time I saw a shrimp that large. The piece of fish I received was also very large. Overall the taste was good. I’m not a big fan of fish, but the fish and the shrimp didn’t have that ‘fishy’ taste, which was good. The chicken tasted like any fried chicken you would get at a supermarket. The problem was that everything tasted the same. The batter was very good, but after a few bites you almost got sick of it. I would have liked the shrimp to have a different taste from the fish. The onion rings were by far my favorite. Just looking at them I knew they were going to be good. They were flavorful, crunchy, and still moist inside.

Location:

This is a tiny store in the corner of a little shopping center. Look for the 7-11 and it’s in that same center. The store itself was clean and spacious enough for several people to sit as well as for people to stand and wait for their order to cook. The lady working the counter was very nice and seemed genuinely happy.

2614 Pacific Ave
Long Beach, CA 90806

Summary:

The food here is fairly average, it is tasty but it never WOW’d me. If you are hungry and don’t want to spend a lot of money, this is a great place to go since the portions are so large. If you want truly great fish and chips, you might want to try someplace else. I would have given this place four stars if there was more variance in the flavor of the fried items. Perhaps different seasonings in the batter to compliment the food that it holds. I will go back here when I’m in the mood for something different, or I want to have some good onion rings but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get here.
